Tell them it is very common to self-medicate…it regulates the moods. Alcohol is a depressant, which calms the mania. drugs like coke amp you up into mania. Let them know it is the brain trying to “fix” itself. Or, don’t tell them about the substances, just about the bipolar. Not your fault, any more than Diabetes would be. Find out, does it run in your family?
